"Bottom line: If you're a "Watchmen" fan, there's something sick about you. You're sick if you enjoy watching wanton rape, torture, and murder, no matter what the background for it is. I don't care if it first appeared in a warped comic book paraded with a high-brow euphemism for comic book."

- Debbie Schlussel, found here

This is why I can't fucking stand far-right conservatives. They don't even try to see the other side. They don't listen. I can totally understand how someone could not particularly like the graphic violence in a movie like Watchmen. They have the right to not see it, just as I have the right to see it. I don't judge that. She, however, has passed blanket judgement. We're all "warped and stupid" and "maybe your sister should be fed to dogs and your mother raped and your brother should have his arms sawed off. You know, just to make the point."

She also has completely, completely missed the point of the comic. For one, it actually did seem quite right-leaning to me. Secondly...I'm a writer. I know good writing. I'm a student of philosophy. I know deep, interesting ideas. This story has both. Calling those who do see that stupid just because you don't is absolutely the height of irony.

*deep sigh*

Seriously. This chick's nuts.

Watchmen

Man, it's been forever since I updated...a combination of being busy and not having much to talk about, I guess.

*Spoiler-free*

So. Watchmen was completely awesome. I was really glad that I read the comic before seeing the movie, because half the fun was picking out the little recognizable things from that version. Also, I feel like the story would have been pretty confusing without reading the graphic novel first.

I honestly have almost no complaints. There were a few notable lines I missed, and a few scenes felt a bit rushed, but overall, just fantastic stuff. I was really, really entertained throughout. I love how they managed to retain the deep ideas from the comic along with the rest of it. The philosophy was really was made the story for me, and it was there, and I went home thinking, which I just love to do.

And oh my god, the SEX AND VIOLENCE! People probably think I'm completely obsessed with this stuff because I get so excited for it, but the reason I get excited is that you NEVER GET TO SEE IT. Movies like to pussy out so they can get a PG-13 rating (like fucking Terminator...we'll see how that one plays out), and I HATE THAT. This movie? This movie had some of the most brutal, almost sickening violence I've ever seen, and sex that was almost porn-worthy. It was awesome. The story DEMANDED that. Good for them.

That said...there were definitely kids in the theatre we were in. Young, young kids. This is NOT a kid's movie. They really should not have been there. I would have been seriously disturbed by some of the shit that goes down in this movie, seeing it at that age. Don't parents even look at ratings? Come on...take some responsibility!

Overall, though, AWESOME. Go see it.

ETA: Also, JDM was amazing! It was so cool to see him just go out there and be a total badass! Also, I would totally hit that! I want more JDM movies! More, I say! *will totally fangirl him* *needs a Comedian icon, but will use a John one for now*

ETA2: Better. Yay icon!
