16 - Bag of Bones by Stephen King 5/5

731 pages in two days. That's pretty incredible, even for someone who reads as fast as me. King manages to suck me in pretty thoroughly more often than not, but this was ridiculous. Some of my fascination was because I was creeped out, and for some reason, my brain is convinced that if I can only finish the story, the fear will go away - which it generally does. Some of it was that I was emotionally invested in the characters. But more than that, this was an amazingly written story. The main character is a writer, so I was constantly reminded of writing and reading as a writer, and paying such close attention to the craft of this book made me truly admire just how tight it is. Though I love King, there are certainly flaws that show up in his work. Pacing problems, especially at the beginning. Tangents that take us away from the main story. Far too many characters and so many names that you find yourself having to look back to remember which belongs to who. None of these appear in Bag of Bones. This is King when he's simply on, and there's just no better storyteller than that.

17 - Tangled Webs by Anne Bishop 4/5

Ah, Anne Bishop...the most entertaining hack this side of Dan Brown. This book, like the others in the Black Jewels universe, is full of seriously fucked-up gender politics, horrible made-up slang that peppers every page, and characters that are hardly more than fanfiction cliches. But damn if it isn't fun to read! This book took me about eight hours to get through - possibly a new record - and though it really didn't add anything to the series, it was quite pleasureable to see Daemon Sadi ("The Sadist") in action again. The perfect piece of fluff to follow an intense and emotional ride like Bag of Bones.
